Brace yourself for an adrenaline-charged experience that begins with a high-speed jet boat crossing of Lake Hauroko, New Zealand’s deepest lake. This is followed by an exhilarating descent down the Wairaurahiri River, famous for its Grade 3 whitewater rapids.
Location: Wairaurahiri River, Fiordland National Park
Wairaurahiri Wilderness Jet operates along the South Coast of Fiordland National Park, servicing Lake Hauroko and the Wairaurahiri River catchment.
Lake Hauroko drains directly into the Wairaurahiri River, which drops approximately 200 metres from lake level to the sea. Spanning 27 kilometres of continuous Grade 3 whitewater, the river is often described as New Zealand’s longest waterfall. It is a rare and powerful natural phenomenon.
The Wairaurahiri River Adventure
Aboard the jet boat, you’ll speed across the vast waters of Lake Hauroko. Then, you’ll dive into the intake of the Wairaurahiri River, one of the most remote and untouched rivers in the country.
Flowing through virgin beech forest more than one million years old, the river offers a truly secluded wilderness experience. This is found nowhere else in New Zealand.
This journey is the ultimate combination of thrilling jet boating and pristine natural surroundings.
As you descend the river, you’ll surge past bush-clad banks and weave through rock-strewn rapids. You also venture deep into the southern wilderness of Fiordland. There’s also the option to take a short walk over the Wairaurahiri Swing Bridge, leading into ancient temperate rainforest.
At the river’s mouth on the South Coast, you may choose to trek inland to view the impressive Percy Burn Viaduct. Alternatively, you can simply relax and enjoy the abundant wildlife found along New Zealand’s rugged southern shoreline.
