This is where Polynesian explorer Kupe built the first Maori Pa (village) on the hill next to this property, with the anchor stone from his waka (canoe) honoured at the local Marae (community house), and also the esteemed Tane Mahuta God of Waipoua Forest is nearby. [This west-coast Hokianga location is just over an hour’s drive from the east-coast Bay of Islands, which is the heart of Maori-European history. If you want to visit the Bay of Islands, but don’t want to stay in that “tourist mecca” the west coast is divine to chill out in.]
