Free-Range Hunting

Free-range trophy hunts provide opportunities to pursue mature Red Stag and Fallow Stag in natural hunting country, accompanied by experienced guides with extensive knowledge of the property.

Guiding options are available for individual hunters and small hunting parties.

Estate Trophy Hunting

For hunters seeking a specific trophy experience, Okau also offers estate hunting packages within extensive natural game habitat.

Red Stag hunting is available across different trophy classes, with other game species potentially including Fallow Deer, Arapawa Ram, wild boar, goats and turkey depending on the chosen hunt and current availability.

Red Stag Hunting

Red Stag hunting in New Zealand is one of Okau’s signature experiences, with both free-range and estate options available.

The Red Stag Roar provides a particularly exciting period to hunt, when the stags become more vocal and active during the breeding season.

The Red Stag Roar typically takes place from late March through April, with other hunting opportunities available throughout the year depending on the species and type of hunt.

Fallow Deer Hunting

Fallow Deer provide another popular hunting option at Okau, with trophy and meat hunting opportunities available.

Hunters can discuss their preferred experience directly with the Okau team, allowing the most appropriate hunt to be arranged around individual goals, timing and current conditions.

Meat & Cull Hunts

Not every hunting trip needs to focus on trophies. Okau also offers meat and cull hunts for hunters looking for a practical and relaxed experience in the New Zealand outdoors.

These hunts can include Fallow or Red Deer and may include self-catered coastal accommodation. Meals can also be arranged depending on the selected package.

Bow Hunting

Bow hunters are also welcome at Okau.

Because bow hunting generally requires additional stalking time and a closer approach to the animal, Okau recommends allowing additional time when planning this type of hunting trip.

Okau Hunting began with Gert and Christine Vermeer and is now operated by their son Boyd Vermeer and his partner Kim.

Having grown up at Okau Station, Boyd has extensive knowledge of its terrain and wildlife, while Kim looks after bookings and helps ensure guests are well looked after throughout their stay.
