3 hour tour
10.30am to 1.30pm
Open from 1st October to 30th April
Minimum age: No minimum age and no cost for children under five years of age if accompanied by an adult paying guest.
What to bring: Shoes suitable for walking and optional jacket, hat and water bottle. We recommend sunscreen and don’t forget your camera
Meeting point: Our meeting point is just down from the thermal pools entrance in the main street of the village. You won’t miss the llamas!
This easy 3 hour tour is designed to be a fun, educational and interactive llama experience suitable for all ages.
After meeting your llama, our friendly guide will give a short introductory session then you’ll set off at a leisurely pace. You may like a gentle stroll through the village, maybe stop for a coffee at a local cafe or window shop. The llamas do tend to attract a crowd so if that’s not your thing you may prefer to spend more time just hanging out with your llama in the solitude of the historic hospital’s park like surrounds.
Relax, wander with your llama and simply enjoy the grounds. Our leisurely pace gives your guide the opportunity to share their knowledge of the area’s history and interesting facts about llamas. Your camera is guaranteed a workout! Any photos we’ve taken are freely shared with you as well.
Now it’s ‘Lunch with a Llama’ time. It’s just a short walk to a local restaurant for lunch which is included in your tour cost. Each of our llama’s has a distinct personality so while you relax over lunch in an outdoor setting, just watch that cheeky Munro doesn’t get up to his favourite trick of nudging the lid off the carrots container and helping himself. Dreamy Inca will just lie down beside the table and sleep with his eyes open, though he did once sneak a chip and eat it!

About Hanmer Llama Tours
We don’t have a set itinerary – maybe you’d like to try your hand at skeet shooting or clay bird shooting. Relax with a swim or picnic by a private river hole, bird watching, photography, eeling, stargazing, spotting wild animals such as chamois or red deer. All the while your gentle llama companion will stroll along beside you, carrying everything so you can simply take in the scenery. Your friendly guide grew up in the South Island’s high country so there’s tales to be told!
If you fancy trying your hand at a little self guided trout fishing you’re welcome to bring your own equipment or we can supply at a small fee. Alternatively the station has professional fishing or hunting guides available at a separate additional cost.
The station is located a mere 30 minutes away from the alpine thermal resort town of Hanmer Springs and 90 minutes from Christchurch airport.
