Marine Wildlife Sea Kayaking in Akaroa
The Pōhatu Marine Reserve is home to some of Akaroa’s most remarkable marine wildlife. While sea kayaking, guests commonly encounter white-flippered penguins, playful fur seals, nesting seabirds and, at times, Hector’s dolphins, the world’s smallest dolphin species.
Just an hour and a half drive from Christchurch, Akaroa offers the perfect setting for an unforgettable wildlife sea-kayaking adventure. Start your journey with a scenic 4WD mini-van ride, taking you through the stunning Akaroa Harbour from the rim of its ancient volcanic crater. From there, head to the Pohatu Marine Reserve to explore the wild outer coastline of Banks Peninsula by kayak. Marvel at towering cliffs, dramatic rock stacks, hidden sea caves, and unique wildlife along the way. Discover first-hand how the Pohatu Marine Reserve is a gateway to adventure.
One of the highlights of the tour is the impressive Flea Bay Island and its distinctive island arch, best appreciated in calm sea conditions. As you paddle, you’ll have the chance to spot New Zealand’s native wildlife, including the Kororā (White-Flippered Penguin), playful New Zealand fur seals and their pups, a variety of sea birds, and possibly even the world’s smallest dolphin, the Hector’s dolphin – endemic to New Zealand!
