Stargazing in Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, making the region an exceptional location for observing the Southern Hemisphere night sky.
Away from the bright lights of larger towns and cities, the dark skies reveal thousands of stars along with the Milky Way and neighbouring galaxies visible to the naked eye.
Astro Tekapo goes beyond simply looking at the stars. Your guide introduces constellations, astronomy and different cultural perspectives of the cosmos, including stories of how master navigators used their knowledge of the stars to travel enormous distances across the oceans.
With groups limited to a maximum of 10 guests, there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions and enjoy a more personal stargazing experience.
Astro Experience
Join Astro Tekapo at its lakefront viewing site for a 90-minute guided Lake Tekapo stargazing experience shared with a small group of no more than 10 guests.
Your experience includes:
- Naked-eye stargazing

Powerful Telescope Viewing
Astro Tekapo’s primary telescope is a Celestron CPC Deluxe 925 HD, combining a 9.25-inch aperture, HD optics, computerised mount and integrated GPS.
Premium eyepieces and accessories provide detailed views of objects including the Moon, planets, star clusters and nebulae.
A modern smart telescope allows guests to explore even deeper into space, revealing distant galaxies and clouds of gas and dust in greater colour and detail.

Meet Your Astro Tekapo Guide
Astro Tekapo was founded by Sang, whose journey into astronomy began beneath the pristine skies of Chile’s Atacama Desert.
After growing up in Korea and Belgium, Sang’s love of travel, adventure and the outdoors eventually took him to northern Chile, home to some of the world’s most remarkable astronomical observing conditions.
There he undertook astronomy courses with Massimo Tarenghi of the European Southern Observatory and Eric Escalera of Astronomica del Sur Ltda.
His background also includes qualifications and experience in geography, environmental research and surveying, along with nine years of professional guiding experience, including work with expedition and stargazing operators.
In 2024, that experience led to the creation of Astro Tekapo in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
