    The arrival point of this itinerary is Auckland Airport where you can pick up your rental vehicle. The route takes in the East Coast of the North Island through to the Central Plateau region and to the Mt Ruapehu ski area

    Many towns around the Mt Ruapehu boundary including Ohakune, Waiouru, National Park Village, Whakapapa & Turoa Skifield and Turangi.

    Continue onto the West Coast of the North Island onto the capital city of Wellington. From here you can either fly over the Cook Strait, or take the 3 hour journey on the Interislander Ferry through the Marlborough Sounds to the South Island port of Picton. Most rental car companies allow you to drop your rental vehicle off in Wellington and collect another in Picton.

    The route carries on along the East Coast of the South Island to the Canterbury region and  the town of Kaikoura nad the ski area of Mt Lyford  Skiing near Kaikoura

    Mt Lyford ski area is 60km from Kaikoura and the same distance from Hanmer Springs

    From here travel via Chrischurch (which is about a 2 hour drive including a rest) and then drive on to the alpine town of Methven/Mt Hutt ski area. The journey from Christchurch to Methven is about 100 km and takes about 75 minutes.

    Check in to one of our Methven accommodation suppliers. Accommodation choices are plentiful in Methven, with over 2000 beds available. But, it is advisable to book ahead during peak periods.Mt Hutt 

    Ski Mt Hutt for a few days and then wake up nice and early for a 4-5 hour drive to Wanaka & Queenstown where you can choose from a wide range of Queenstown & Wanaka accommodation and activities. Spend a few days skiing the slopes of the Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Treble Cone and Cardrona skifields.

    You can then drop off you rental vehicle and fly home from the Queenstown International Airport either to your international or domestic location. new zealand driving times
