Skiing near Taupo
Mt Ruapehu is the closest mountain to Taupo and is NZ's largest ski and snowboard area.
Driving from Taupo to Mt Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park takes about one hour.
There are 2 skifields on the mountain - Whakapapa & Turoa. The closest town to Whakapapa is the National Park Village, and Ohakune & Raetihi are closer to Turoa.
The Mt Ruapehu ski season usually starts in June each year (depending on snow conditions).
