Rotorua is a major tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors; the tourism industry is by far the largest industry in the Bay of Plenty district.
Rotorua city is known for its geothermal activity, and features geysers – notably the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa – and hot mud pools. This thermal activity is sourced to the Rotorua caldrea on which the city lies.
Rotorua hot pools range from small spa-type natural mineral pools to large thermally heated swimming pool complexes. Healing powers of Rotorua springs have became known as the 'Priest's Bath' and Rotorua's reputation as a health resort has been spreading ever since.
Accommodation in Rotorua is plentiful, and provides visitors with a variety of accommodation options near the tourist attractions - ranging from budget and backpacker hostels to hotels, motels and luxury bed & breakfast lodges.
Rotorua is most famous for it's Maori cultural heritage, and this is reflected in the large variety of Maori culture experiences on offer in the city. These include visiting a traditional working Maori village, to an evening culture show with traditional hangi feast.
With 17 lakes, the Rotorua region is an aquatic paradise and is famous for its trout fishing. Waterskiing, swimming and other water activities are also popular.
