Nelson, the main city of the Tasman region is a beautiful coastal city set amongst some of New Zealand's most stunning scenery, and is NZ's most sunniest city with over 2,500 sunshine hours per year. Nelson is the economic and cultural centre for the Nelson-Tasman region and offers an excellent range of shopping, eating and cultural experiences with an abundance of parks, rivers, beaches and nature trails to explore.
Nelson has the largest fishing port in New Zealand and is renowned for its seafood. Because of Nelson's mild climate the region is also famous for it's many vineyards and McCashin’s Brewery.
The Nelson region covers five distinct geographic areas:
- The urban centres of Nelson & Richmond
- The highways of Mapua, Motueka, Moutere, through rolling horticultural land
- The idyllic coastline of Abel Tasman National Park
- The heart of the parks, Golden Bay between Kahurangi and Abel Tasman national parks
- The alpine lakes and rivers around St Arnaud - Nelson Lakes & Murchison including Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi national parks
Visitors to this region have an exciting variety of activities available including kayaking in the national parks, 4 wheel drive adventures, wine & art tours, hiking and vineyards. There is also plenty of different accommodation options to choose from such as self contained motels, hotels, luxury harbourside apartments, boutique lodges and bed & breakfast accommodation.
Tasman Region
Located at the top of the South Island, the Tasman region is New Zealands nature at its finest. Home to may of the countrys national parks, Tasman is the perfect place to explore and discover lakes, rivers, mountains, beaches, waterfalls, and native bush.
Discover Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park and Nelson Lakes National Park. Each of these parks are unique. Activities in the parks include the great walks of Abel Tasman Coastal Track and the Heaphy Track, lake fishing for salmon and trout and kayaking crystal clear waters.
The Tasman region also has stunning waterfall walks; visit Whiskey Falls in the Nelson Lakes National Park, or Whispering Falls near Nelson.
A hidden treasure is the Kina Peninsula, tucked away in the curve of the glittering Tasman Bay. It offers expansive blue-water views across Tasman Bay, fringed by the golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park to the north, with Nelson, French Pass and D’Urville Island to the east.
Golden Bay is full of lush green vales, dairy farms, and long broad white sandy bays. The natural environment is stunning. There really is no other part of New Zealand quite like this region. It has more artists and creative types per capita than any other part of the country and has a very relaxed community vibe.
Kaiteriteri is a seaside resort town and is the main gateway to Abel Tasman National Park. An extremely popular holiday spot, the town bustles in the Summer months. Home to natural attractions such as Split Apple Rock, golden sandy beaches and turquoise waters, this regions beauty can be enjoyed all year round.
