Martinborough, in southern Wairarapa, is 65 km north-east of Wellington, on the other side of the Rimutaka mountain range that divides the lower North Island. It has a sophisticated culture for a small country town, with boutique shopping and excellent restaurants.
Martinborough's river soils and climate, protected from the prevailing westerly wind, make it an ideal region for vineyards and wineries. The Pinot Noir grape is most commonly grown.
Just 10 km west of Martinborough is Lake Wairarapa, great for fishing, bird watching and shooting. Scenic tours, vineyard tours and quad-bike (ATV) adventures are among popular activities.

Martinborough’s nearest airport is in Masterton, 35 km to the north - a short journey by train. Regional coach tours are another way to get around.

Martinborough’s many vineyards are its major attraction, with winery tours a popular activity. Many vineyards have cafes or restaurants on-site, and some have an accommodation option also.
Martinborough boasts a beauty spa and a number of boutique and antique shops. There are public parks, gardens and historic buildings to visit within the town.
Beyond the town centre, visitors can explore the countryside and visit nearby Lake Wairarapa. A quad-bike adventure park offers an adrenalin fix.
As with most towns in New Zealand, Martinborough has a golf club and 18-hole course.
