The Wellington Cable Car is one of Wellington’s oldest & most popular tourist attractions.
No trip to Wellington is complete without a ride on the famous Cable Car. It has been running since 1902, and whilst the cars themselves have changed, the route remains. Cable cars operate approximately every 10 minutes, 364 days of the year.
Hop on at Lambton Quay in the heart of the CBD and within minutes you’re a world away at Kelburn and close to many of Wellington’s top attractions. Take time at the lookout to enjoy stunning views over the city and harbour – Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Adjacent to the lookout is the Cable Car Museum (Free admission) and the top entrance of the Botanic Garden.
From here you can visit the Carter Observatory where you can step into Aotearoa’s unique skies, or explore the award winning eco-sanctuary of Zealandia, take the free shuttle or walk via Kelburn Village with its shops and cafes.
There are several walks around the hillsides of the Botanic Garden, including a beautiful 40-minute ramble back down to Lambton Quay via historic Bolton Street Cemetery and the Beehive. There is also a Garden Shuttle, operating on the same days that the cruise ships are in port. Once at the Rose Garden and Begonia House, simply hop on the Garden Shuttle and be transported back to the cable car ready for your return journey.
