The Ranui of Hokianga
The Hokianga is the second largest natural harbour in New Zealand. One of the most historically significant areas for Maori, it is the part of Aotearoa where Kupe first called home. Horeke, Kohukohu and Rawene are among the oldest European settlements in New Zealand. Today the region has the feeling of being relatively undiscovered, with beautiful beaches, massive sand dunes and few people.
At 32 ft (10 m), the Ranui is certified to carry 23 passengers. The Ranui has a history all of its own. Originally called the 'El Alamein', the Ranui ferried returned servicemen from Rotorua to Lake Rotoiti shortly after the second world war, though spent much of its life on Lake Taupo.
