Baton Run Horse Treks, Nelson
Fiona Simons guides half to 3 day horse treks through Nelson's untamed back country, located at the top of New Zealand's South Island only 50 minutes from Abel Tasman National Park.
Baton Run offers an experience well off the beaten track.
We like to keep trips small (five people or less) and personal, with a sense of adventure exploring five unique valleys bordering the Kahurangi National Park.
Opportunities to trot & canter - River crossings - Mustering cattle & sheep - Luxury food & accommodation - Quad bike adventures
1/2 to 3 day horse treks
Fiona and Richard’s passion is to be out in the mountains on quality horses with good company.
Clients have the option of exploring five valleys bordering the Kahurangi National Park and will have over 2023 hectares of land to ride on. Landscapes vary and you will wind through native bush, listening to the native song of the Tui and Bell Bird, and canter across green fields surrounded by majestic mountains, including Mount Arthur.
Enjoy mountain vistas on a quality horse that is willing and well-schooled. Trek up high on winding tracks through the native bush and down steep tracks crossing gushing rivers.
There will be opportunities to canter and trot if your experience allows you. Clients that book the five day trek can journey up to our Alpine Hut for the night, with views over Tasman Bay and beyond, and explore five valleys in complete peace. When it's hot they can swim with their horse in the river at the end of the day.
Food - All food is country style cooking and we use meat from our own farm, including honey cured bacon. We also grow our own vegetables and can cater for vegetarians.
Accommodation - All bedding provided.
Honeywell Hut (Sleeps five people)
This hut is the accommodation for all treks of up to 3 days and the base to explore a different location each day. The hut has bunk style beds with a small kitchen, open-to-the-stars hot showers and an outside hot tub.
Alpine Hut (Sleeps five people)
When choosing the 3 day trek, clients will overnight here for one night. The Alpine Hut is located at 1,000 metres and overlooks Tasman Bay. It has unusual wooden sculptures and is fully equipped for cooking and showers. There is also an outdoor bush bath to soak in.
If you don't have your own transport, we can arrange to pick you up from Motueka, Mapua, Richmond or Nelson.
