Join us on an extraordinary journey
Discover the extraordinary changes to New Zealand's wildlife over the last thousand years. Lose yourself in the sights and sounds of an ancient forest. Marvel at the prehistoric animals as you stand before life-like models of the majestic moa and fearsome Haast's eagle. Learn how we almost destroyed what took millions of years of isolation to create. And finally, the massive efforts being made to protect and preserve what makes New Zealand unique and extraordinary.
Roam the sanctuary valley
Zealandia is the world's first fully-fenced urban wildlife sanctuary - a safe haven for some of New Zealand's rarest native animals like the kaka - our playful forest parrot - and dozens more species found nowhere else in the world. The popular ranger talks provide fascinating stories about some of Zealandia’s most exciting residents, such as kaka, weta and tuatara. The free talks run daily at 12.15pm, 1.15pm, 2.15pm & 3.15pm.
Enjoy food and shopping
Grab a bite to eat at Rata, Zealandia'a's unique terrace cafe. The view across the lake makes this one of the best spots in Wellington to enjoy lunch. Rata sources quality local produce and a selection of boutique beer and wine. Take away options are available. The Zealandia Store features a quality range of gifts for any occasion.
Zealandia By Night Tour
Kiwi and tuatara are just two of the iconic species often encountered on the unique Zealandia by Night tour.
Enjoy highlights of the state of the art multi-media exhibition before stepping through the pest-proof fence into the forest, where you will experience something incredible - evening birdsong that hasn't been heard on the mainland for more than a century. As darkness falls look out for New Zealand’s elusive national mascot – the kiwi. Over 100 call the sanctuary valley home, so there’s a good chance of spotting one, foraging in the leaf litter! Often, the glow-worms are so bright you won’t even need a torch! This is a totally unforgettable experience: New Zealand at its very best.
