Things to do in the Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands is the ‘Birthplace of a Nation’ where you will find fantastic attractions on both land and sea. Visit some of New Zealand's earliest historic sites at Waitangi, enjoy water sports in Paihia, sample local produce and see the country’s oldest building in Kerikeri, or stay in romantic Russell, a small town full of historic buildings, beachside cafes and galleries. A great destination at any time of the year, experience the natural beauty of this region on your next break away.
What to Do in the Bay of Islands
- Hire a yacht - Try your hand at sailing around the bay, and moor at one of the 144 islands. You have the option of a skippered charter, or for the more experienced bareboat hire is also an option.
- Go Fishing – Join a fishing charter to fish some of the most abundant seas in the world. Take your catch home or be kind to the environment by catching and releasing. You may be lucky to see whales and dolphins while out on the water.
- The Kerikeri Mission Station has two of New Zealand's oldest buildings; the Stone Store and Kemp House which are open to the public. The surrounding garden is the oldest continuously cultivated European garden in New Zealand. The buildings contain relics and displays of their own history.
- Visit a Bay of Islands Farmers Market in either Paihia or Kerikeri, open every Saturday & Sunday. Buy local produce and products and support the locals.
- Discover the history of New Zealand at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, New Zealand’s most important historic site.
- Play golf at one of the golf courses in the area. Kerikeri, Waitangi, Kauri Cliffs and Karikari are all world-class courses, each offering unique challenges.
- Try mountain biking or hiking on one of the fantastic tracks.
- Walking and hiking in the Bay of Islands is a wonderful, peaceful way to soak up the beauty, wildlife history and local Maori culture of the area.
- Relish great quality seafood and local delicacies at one of the Bay of Islands’ restaurants.
