This is your opportunity to explore the remote and beautiful wilderness areas of the North Island of New Zealand. Join our small group guided walks on the Lake Waikaremoana Guided Walk and other hiking tours around Te Urewera National Park and Rotorua.

Lake Waikaremoana Guided Walk
A four-day all-inclusive, Rotorua-to-Rotorua, guided hike on the 46km Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk Track through Te Urewera National Park.

Lake Waikaremoana is situated in Te Urewera National Park, the largest area of untouched natural wilderness remaining in the North Island of New Zealand. Highlights include: journeying through a forgotten wilderness area of NZ, where small populations of Maori tribes still live in the forest; circumnavigating the beautiful and pristine Lake Waikaremoana; hiking through dense native rainforest in the most diverse botanical region of NZ; spectacular geological formations; abundant birdlife (kiwi, kaka, kereru, tui etc); rich history; opportunities for kayaking and swimming in the lake or natural thermal hot springs.
This is a true New Zealand wilderness experience with small groups and knowledgeable local guides, staying in authentic NZ bush huts.

Day 1: Hike around the edge of an estuary to reach Lake Waikaremoana. Follow the shores of the lake to the first hut, passing a North Island brown kiwi reserve. Approx 4 hours hiking.
Day 2: Hike the length of the tranquil Wairaumoana arm of the lake, enjoying lakeside picnics and possibly swimming and kayaking. Side trip to idyllic Korokoro Falls. Approx 6 hours hiking.
Day 3: Climb the Panekiri Ridge, through dense Podocarp rainforest to the enchanted silver beech forest on the mountaintops. Breathtaking views of the lake, national park, Pacific Ocean, and get a birds-eye view of the terrain you covered over the past 3 days. Approx 4 hours hiking.
Day 4: Continue along the Panekiri Ridge to the infamous bluffs; sandstone rock ledges that drop sheer to the lake 600 metres below. Celebratory lunch then journey back to Rotorua, with an opportunity to relax your body in a natural thermal hot spring. Approx 5 hours hiking.

The Lake Waikaremoana Guided Walk is available on these dates: 2006: March 28; April 4, 11, 25; May 8; November 14, 21, 28; December 5, 12. 2007: February 6, 13, 20, 27; March 6, 13, 20, 27; April 2, 10, 17, 24; May 1. (Other dates can be arranged by request)

Urewera Discovery Tour
The Urewera Discovery Tour is a three day, all-inclusive New Zealand walking holiday exploring the Waikaremoana area, with a focus on short walks and maximum personal comfort.

Waikaremoana New Zealand shrouds an intriguing history, from its intense geological formation in ancient times to tumultuous periods of fighting between pro and anti-government forces less than one hundred years ago. All this contrasts with the untouched beauty and remoteness the Waikaremoana area still enjoys.

Over twenty short walks and attractions provide insights into its stormy history and raw wildness. We have thoroughly explored and researched the region, so we can ably assist you in your journey of discovery.

The Urewera Discovery Tour, one of our popular New Zealand walking holiday tours, includes a scenic drive from Rotorua to Waikaremoana, two nights chalet-style accommodation in Waikaremoana, and three days of guided walks and sightseeing.

The Urewera Discovery Tour is available on these dates: 2006: April 4; May 2; November 17; December 1, 15. 2007: January 9, 16, 30; February 9, 23; March 9, 23; April 13. (Other dates can be arranged by request)

Both the Lake Waikaremoana Guided Walk and Urewera Discovery Tour include: transport to/from Rotorua; accommodation; all meals and snacks; wine; hiking equipment such as sleeping bags, backpacks and raincoats; a support boat on Lake Waikaremoana; and friendly, knowledgeable guides.

Rotorua Day Walks
We offer a full day exploring Rotorua's natural wonders and scenic highlights. The day includes hiking through a giant stand of native podocarp forest, walking amongst some of the world's most impressive geothermal activity, and finishing with a soak in one of Rotorua's special natural hot springs. Includes: transport; entry fees to parks; yummy picnic lunch, snacks and drinks; local guide.
The Rotorua Day Walk is available every day from November to April.
