Waiau
Downs has 4500 sheep, ponies, a horse, donkeys, pet lambs, cattle,
deer and many dogs. Waiau Downs Farm Adventures is a unique farm
experience that has several tours available. We offer sheep shearing,
wool-handling, dogs working, cow milking, deer farm and plenty more.
Farm
Adventure Tour
This is a guided tour of our 300-hectare farm (750 acres).Our vehicles
available are:
- five
seater Toyota Surf 4x4
- eight
seater luxury Granvia Coach 4x4
- larger
groups on a fine day in a Hino 4x4 truck
You
will be amongst large flocks of sheep and will have wonderful photo
opportunities. Heading dog 'Perk' will demonstrate his ability to
move sheep from one part of the farm to another.
At
the woolshed, 'Perk' will muster a mob into the woolshed. Backing
dog 'Dan' will help to separate some sheep for shearing. A commentary
on the shearing and what happens to the wool makes for an interesting
conclusion of your tour.
You
will have chance to 'throw' the fleece of wool onto the sorting
table. Plastic bags will be available for those wanting to take
wool samples with them.
Other
seasonal activities are available and can be included in every trip.
Perhaps a short ride on a friendly horse, feed the pet lambs, try
your luck at working a dog, feed sheep nuts to the pet sheep and
help in the sheep yards.

Shearing Tour - This tour includes dogs working and woolhandling.Visitors
can have a go at shearing a sheep themselves, learn about woolhandling,
and have a go at throwing a fleece.

Dairy Tour - A short trip in one of our 4x4 vehicles to
to a Dairy Farm where you will be up close with hundreds of cows
- 600 of them at one cowshed at milking time.

Deer Tour - 4x4 tour to a 1000 acres deer farm where you
will be up real close with some of the animals. See some large
mobs of deer on the property which boarders the Longwood Forest
to the east. If the friendly calves do make you welcome the four
labrador dogs sure will!
