Tamaki Heritage Village Christchurch cultural attraction—Experience New Zealand Maori culture and see history come to life!

Our story begins in the early 1800s and relives the impact of European culture upon Maori—exploring the choices our ancestors faced—torn between the promise of new ways brought by the European, and the age old values of their ancestors.

Our Christchurch Cultural Attraction
From New Zealand's most awarded Maori tourism company, Tamaki Heritage Experiences, comes a powerful new encounter with South Island history, landscape and New Zealand Maori culture.

Tamaki Heritage Village Christchurch cultural attraction—Lost in Our Own Land—is a significant and highly educational true story of one people, torn between two worlds. Watch the battle unfold and witness two proud cultures navigate their way through a tumultuous period of New Zealand history.

This spectacular 3.5 hour evening encounter is shared by a cast of more than 40 actors, and traverses two villages—one Maori and one European. It spans more than 20 acres of land and almost 200 years of New Zealand history.

Through the descendants of these early South Island Maori, experience for yourself the impact of a rebel faction of musket wielding warriors wrecking havoc upon their own people—a deeply traditional tribe at the village of Matuku Moana on the land of Ihutai. Then, travel by tram to the colonial village of Ferrymead.

Move through time as both Maori and European come to realise each other's differences. Lost in our Own Land examines the changes through time, covering religion, education, family, tribal and social structures and offers insight in to the differing beliefs around the relationship between people and the land.

Finally, experience the strength of today's bi-cultural New Zealand—as you are hosted by people of dual heritage, entertained by Kapahaka (Maori song and Dance) and then ultimately enjoy an authentic (in-ground) Hangi Feast.
