Discovery
Flights - Here at Southern Wings we offer three Southern Experiences
that will satisfy your appetite for all things Southern.
Catlins Coast
Soar with Southern Wings and experience the magic of the Catlins.
This scenic flight will show you many wonders of the deep south.
Rugged rocky coastlines, and broad beaches are home to a variety
of bird and animal life. You can catch glimpses of wildlife as you
cruise along the coast taking in the breathtaking panoramic views.
Rich in pre-European and recent history, the Catlins will charm
and delight you.
Fiordland
and Southern Lakes
Travel over untamed lands of spectacular scenic beauty on a poignant
journey of discovery. View the site of the first European settlement
and travel on to the fresh alpine climate of Southern Fiordland.
The path we take carries you over bush clad hillsides and valleys
of one of New Zealands newest coastal walking tracks, Tuatapere
Hump Ridge Track. Over lakes and rivers to the sea you may see wildlife,
ancient forests and the resting place of a Maori princess. Experience
the raw splendour of the west coast and Southern Lakes of New Zealand,
rich in historical significance and full of interesting geographic
features.
Stewart Island
Rakiura National Park
Sweep across Foveaux Strait, over remote islands and wildlife sanctuaries
to Stewart Island. Spectacular views of sheltered bays, secluded
coves and craggy coastlines surround dense bushlands. Rakiura National
Park reaches across the island and serves to conserve and protect
native flora and fauna. The sleepy seaside village of Oban sits
across the inlet from marine farms that produce some of the finest
Salmon and Mussels found in the world. This quality experience is
completed as your journey winds up, you are carried over the strait
and Southland plains to touch down in the friendly city, Invercargill.
Discovery
Stopovers
You can include a Discovery Stopover on any one of Southern
Wings Discovery Flights. Recommended lunch stops can
be made at:
- The
Moth at Mandeville Airfield, providing an internationally
acclaimed dining experience. The Moth is located beside the Croydon
Aircraft Companys workshop and museum. It is at this workshop
that crafts men lovingly restore De Havilland vintage bi planes.
- Church
Hill Café or South Seas Hotel at Oban,
on Stewart Island. It is here that you can sample world famous
seafood dishes fresh from Foveaux Strait. Try Bluff Oysters, Blue
Cod, Whitebait or Mutton Birds in season.
- A variety
of quality dining is available at Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland
National Park and walking capital of the world. The range runs
from Quaint, to Trendy.
Other lunch
stopovers can be included. Depending on the particular Discovery
Flight you choose.
An enormously
popular stopover option is a beach landing and brief walk on Mason
Bay on the west coast of Stewart Island. Why? Just because you can.
This will always be dependant on weather, beach conditions and tides,
which are assessed daily.
