As winner of ‘Best Heritage Attraction’ at the 2000, 2001 & 2002 New Zealand Tourism Awards, Rotorua Museum is the perfect place to start your Rotorua adventure.

Permanent Exhibitions

Rotorua Bath House - Visit a place where patients were encouraged to bathe in electrifying currents!
In the early part of this century it wasn’t the All Blacks, the kiwi or Black Magic that New Zealand was famous for. It was Rotorua’s Bath House - the New Zealand government’s first investment in the fledgling tourism industry.

A building with a fascinating and sometimes bizarre past, the Bath House is New Zealand’s most photographed building and an architectural icon in itself.

In this award-winning exhibition you can recapture the heyday of the “Great South Seas Spa” as our building was once known. Discover why people (including a surprising range of celebrities) came from all over the world to investigate the curative powers of the treatments administered right here in Rotorua’s Bath House.

Discover the spiritual world of Te Arawa. Te Arawa are tangata whenua (original inhabitants) of the Rotorua District. In this stunning exhibition you are invited to journey through time with the people of Te Arawa, from the ancient homeland of Hawaiki through to modern day Rotorua.

Tarawera - Te Maunga Tapu. The eruption of Mt Tarawera. In this exhibition you can learn much more about this great story. Discover the geological origins of the area, trace the development of the tourism industry in New Zealand, and experience the drama of the eruption and its tragic aftermath.

AKE! AKE! The story of B Company of 28 Maori Battalion. Learn about B Company of 28 Maori Battalion and its epic battles in Greece, Crete, North Africa and Italy during World War II.

Changing Exhibitions & Events. We pride ourselves on maintaining a diverse range of contemporary Exhibitions & Events showcasing the works of local, national and international artists and photographers.
