Pohatu-Flea
Bay is a small coastal bay and the site of largest mainland penguin
colony in New Zealand. Nestled between dramatic volcanic heads where
Fur seals lounge on sun baked rocks and White Flippered Penguins hide
out in holes and crevices around the sides of the bay.

Penguin Colony at Pohatu-Flea Bay. Penguin Tours enable you to see
the Penguins unobtrusively and Kayaking allows you to enjoy the
spectacular scenery and wildlife of Pohatu Marine Reserve.
Pohatu
is the largest White Flippered Penguin colony on mainland New Zealand.
Francis and Shireen Helps have worked over the last decade protecting
the birds from introduced predators. Because of the sensitive wildlife
habitat only small guided groups are allowed into the breeding colony.
On these tours you may see one of the Yellow Eyed Penguins who frequent
the bay.
The
best time to come on the Penguin tours is the breeding season between
September and January. There are also small windows of excellent
viewing opportunities from April to September when the birds return
periodically from sea.
