Christchurch is the largest city in the South island and the country's third-largest urban area. It lies one third of the way down the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps.
The Central City and some eastern suburbs have suffered earthquake damage but the city as a whole continues to operate and Christchurch is still a great place to visit. The city is currently being rebuilt and still operation. Christchurch offers many attractions for visitors such as beaches, markets, restaurants, shopping and recreational parks.
The Alpine Pacific Triangle takes you to the gourmet area of Waipara, spa delights of Hanmer Springs and marine mammals of Kaikoura. Between destinations, enjoy the beautiful country scenery.
The Christchurch/Canterbury region boasts a spectacular array of accommodation. From the many motels, historic B&B's and holiday parks in Christchurch, to the more unique lodges and farmstays in the outskirts of the city and rural towns. Visitors to this region are spoilt for choice for activities which include authentic Maori experiences, white water rafting, wildlife tours, fishing, scenic flights and guided tours.
