The breathtaking nature of Whangarei Heads, an area of some 6000Ha of spectacular coastal landscape makes it a 'hidden gem' in Northland New Zealand.
"The Heads" are set on a peninsula nestled between the sheltered bays of Whangarei Harbour on the South and the golden sands of the 5 km long Ocean beach its Northern Pacific coast. This natural wonderland is recognised as one of natural significance due to the richness of fish, forest and bird life and includes one of only five Kiwi sanctuaries in New Zealand.
Being only two hours drive from both Auckland (to the south). and one to two hours drive from the Bay of Islands, Waipoua Forest and other Northland attractions makes Whangarei Heads an obvious base for your stay in Northland. You can combine relaxation away from the main tourist routes with the option of visiting the best of the rest of Northland on day visits.
