Whakarewarewa Thermal Village, Rotorua

Welcome to our world

Through the memorial archway on Tyron Street, Rotorua, (past the Holiday Inn Hotel) is Whakarewarewa, The Living Thermal Village.

An authentic living Maori village, which is home to Tuhourangi, Ngati Wahiao, is set amidst an active geothermal landscape.

The people continue to live surrounded by bubbling hot pools and steaming mineral springs. These pools and springs are used by the locals in everyday life for cooking, bathing and recreational purposes.  Every boiling mud pool, mineral pool, geyser or steam vent is named after an ancestor, event or incident and are therefore part of the history of the tribe.

With understanding and respect for the land, this community have been able to live in close proximity and harmony with the natural creations of Mother Nature.

The guides are all descendants of the survivors of the Tarawera eruption, and under the watchful eye of the Whare Tupuna (Ancestral meeting house) they will take you on an educational journey through time. They will share with you the beautiful history, the nurturing of families, the knowledge and teachings of their ancestors and the perpetuation of their arts, crafts and culture.

Sit back and relax at the twice daily cultural performances, who will share with you songs and dance relating to Whakarewarewa and Rotorua.  Day time hangi meals, cooked in natural steam vents are available daily which enhances this truly authentic experience.  The hangi meal includes chicken, beef, potatoe, cabbage, kumara (sweet potatoe), carrots, bread stuffing and gravy.   Dessert is the famous steam pudding served with fruit, custard and cream.  Another real treat is the yummy Whaka Hangi Pie or you can try just the corn on the cob, cooked within a crystal clear boiling spring, regarded as the largest natural cooking pool in the Southern Hemisphere.
