Tipuna Tours
Tipuna Tours offers cultural and heritage experiences for the visitor. The unique aspects of the tours are the bicultural heritage experiences and the relation of the history to contemporary social, economic and political issues.
As an example, one of the tours offered is the Horouta/Endeavour Tour. This involves taking the visitor to the various sites around the Turanganui River in Gisborne and relating to them the voyaging stories of both vessels. The korero also includes the names of the various sites and landmarks and gives an insight into those tipuna who arrived here aboard those vessels.
The tours can extend to Tolaga Bay, Anaura Bay and Tokomaru Bay if the visitors so desire. The opportunities to discuss contemporary issues such as the economic impact of the development of the Gisborne Harbour and the Tolaga Bay wharf, the social impact on both Maori and Pakeha and the political affects of the foreshore and seabed issue are forever present throughout the tours.
The other unique aspect is the strong emphasis on educating visitors on the cultures and heritage of this country and more specifically, the Tairawhiti.
At Tolaga Bay, visitors can enjoy a walk along the historic wharf or take a guided tour to Cooks Cove and see where Captain Cook and the crew of the Endeavour spent 6 days replenishing their food and water supplies in 1769. This tour can be taken by 4WD or by boat (weather permitting).
For the hardier visitor a 3 hour walk, with a guide, over the DOC walkway to Cooks Cove is also available. Visitors also have the option of experiencing a formal powhiri or welcome at a local marae and enjoying the hospitality of the local people and at the same time sampling some of the local cuisine. If visitors so desire, wine tasting at a small country vineyard or retail therapy at the Tolaga Bay Cashmere Company can also be included in the itinerary.
East Coast Pacific Highway Tour
A 2 day guided driving tour from Gisborne around the East Coast to Opotiki with an overnight stay at Hicks Bay. Enjoy the stories, histories, heritage and contemporary lifestyles of the people of the Tairawhiti. Tours can be arranged for one person, two people or groups from three to forty people. All tours can be arranged so that they are also suitable for children.
The content of all tours is decided upon after discussion with the visitor. Tours are tailor made to the visitors interests and needs.
