The Cottage Homestay Bed & Breakfast, Manapouri
“The Cottage” Homestay Bed and Breakfast
We are an unique homestay providing old-fashioned charm, our home combines olde world with kiwi ingenuity. If you do not like yesteryear this is not the place for you. We are located in a tranquil bush setting offering some water views through the trees of the Waiau River, Lake and Fiordlands mountains.
Enjoy the clear bell-like notes of the Bellbirds, the song of the Thrush, the mimicing Tuis, the Waxeyes, the Finches and the NZ Wood Pigeon, all sharing our cottage garden.
Our Homestay B&B is decorated to our tastes, and is a comfortable Home away from most Homes. Our HOME is only 15 mins ( 20 km ) from the tourist town of Te Anau.
“The Cottage” is ideally situated to visit all of Fiordland’s scenic wonders, Doubtful Sound, Milford Sound, Te Anau and the many walks in the area including a wonderful easy walk at Rainbow Reach, ( part of the Kepler Track). We can also advise on arranging other activities including kayaking, fishing, cruises and scenic trips.
A two-minute walk through the Mountain Beech Trees will take you to the wharf where the boats depart for the Majestic Doubtful Sound, Fiordland and the remarkable Manapouri Power Station. You are welcome to leave you car here while you visit Doubtful Sound.
Our comfortable cottage decor guestrooms have ensuite bathrooms and tea and coffee making facilities, fridge. electric blankets on all the beds. There is a shared lounge, where you can listen to light music.
A laptop is available with wireless connection to internet for you to check your e-mails ( no charge)
Most evenings we have a social hour, with a complimentary glass of N.Z. wine or Southern Man Beer, for those who wish to chat with us and meet other guests.
We are a middle-aged couple who were once known as the “Wilderness Family of Fiordland”, when we lived on an island in Doubtful Sound with our children. Don, who enjoyed fishing, wanted a change from the stress of his profession and city life, and decided to try crayfishing. After a few years of crayfishing he then skippered the F.D.I. boat to West Arm. F.D.I. was a consortium of American, Austrian and New Zealand companies that built the second tail-race tunnel for the Manapouri Power Station at West Arm, which finished in June 2002.
We, with Millie and Archie, (our lovely Bearded Collie and Lowchen Dogs) look forward to welcoming you to our home and helping you explore Fiordland.
Your hosts,
Don and Joy
