Te Urewera Treks, Rotorua Wilderness Guided Forest Walks
Te Urewera Treks operates a unique range of 1-4 day fully catered guided walks for people wanting a truly special trekking experience in New Zealand. We venture into the incredibly remote indigenous forests of Te Urewera and Whirinaki, as well as around the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk. This area is home to some of New Zealand's most magnificent indigenous rainforest, and native birdlife, like kereru (native wood pigeon), tui, and kaka (parrot), is abundant.
The region is also rich in Maori culture, and you will often hear the Maori language being spoken, a rarity in other parts of the country. Tuhoe - the children of the Mist - are the local tribe of Te Urewera and are well known for their warm and welcoming hospitality.
Our local Tuhoe guides, have an extensive knowledge of the area, and the trees, plants, and wildlife that you will encounter. As well as sharing their culture with you, they bring the landscapes alive with colourful stories of the region's histories and mysteries.
Our Treks
Our range of 1-4 day treks offer something for those who are on a tight schedule as well as more in-depth experiences for those who can spend more time venturing into this spectacular and largely undiscovered region of New Zealand. They combine the magnificent podocarp forest of the Whirinaki with the eerie beech forest of Te Urewera and the beautiful Lake Waikaremoana.
The different walks also provide for different fitness and ability levels. Some are along formed trails with gentle to moderate tracks. Others are more challenging both in the steepness of the terrain, and the rugged nature of the unformed wilderness trails.
Because all our treks include at least one local Maori guide, we offer unique treks with a cultural dimension. We take a maximum of 12 people.
