The South Island's most northern cultural and spiritual holiday experience, located on Arapawa Island in the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sounds.
We are located some twenty five miles from the nearest port of Picton and can be travelled to only by marine vessel with a service being offered from there to the holiday site.
The opportunity exists to participate in a variety of healthy outdoor activities from fishing, diving, hunting, hill top hiking, crewing as a member of a polynesian style waka ama kayaking . Enjoy the oratory and tales and history of this very special part of Aotearoa (NZ) along with the myths and legends that surround the whenua and occupy a very important part of our New Zealand history of days gone by.
RUAPARA HOMESTAY
Come and stay with us in our ANCESTRAL HERITAGE HOME and enjoy the unique holiday experience we offer you. Backpackers & Farmstay Accommodation at the historic Ruapara Homestead. Three Rooms with double bed. Two Rooms with two single bed. One Room with one single bed.
Meals are served in the home dining room and when so desired on the deck when barbeque outside dining is available. Also the barbeque is available to guests who may desire to cook the fish and seafood catches at their leisure. Likewise when meal is cooked MAORI Hangi style it also can be served on the deck. We like to give our guests a HANGI meal experience particularly when we have wild game such as wild pig to offer.
View the scenery from the hill tops, great photographic sites and locations. Plant a native tree on the island property as a memorial to your visit to us memorialised in perpetuity as your contribution to the green house gas world wide problem.
Our kaupapa or policy is to establish and continue to operate this facility on the basis of devout manakitanga, hospitality, cultural and whenua spiritual experiences and extend these policies to our manuhiri, whilst providing food and shelter and care.
Bag your catch of fresh water crayfish, koura from the ponds and stream. Cook at your leisure on the deck barbecue along with other shell fish also available with in close proximity to the home stead facility .
We also extend an invitation to those boaties whom enjoy a day's fishing and diving at East Bay. Hot water showers and hot drinks, hot scones and muffins are available from the home stead kitchen come ashore and perhaps also join in with others in the activities including deck barbecue dining and wining.
We also extend to our guests the opportunity to be involved in the on site manufacture of stone product, including green stone product manufacture, which can be taken by our guests as a momento of their stay with us.
RUAPARA TURANGAWAEWAE ACTIVITIES
DAY DIVING AND FISHING TRIPS.
Your host can arrange for your participation in and enjoyment of day diving and fishing trips whilst you are with us. You can also visit many historical areas located within the Queen Charlotte Sounds such as SHIPS COVE where Captain Cook landed on several voyages to this area, the Long Island marine reserve and other historical spots.
Eco-Tours.
Tours To Historic Maori Sites Of Interest in the Marlborough region, with visits to a fully Maori Carved facility consisting of the largest private collection of Maori carvings and also tour includes a visit to a master greenstone and bone carving expert. Other sites of interest of a historic nature are also included , we can also convey tourists to the Seal Colonies of the East Coast,we can arrange for White Water Rafting the East Coasts Clarence River. We can also convey tourists to Kaikoura for the Whale Watch tours should there be a desire and tourists time frames allow.
We also operate a Shuttle Transport Service in the region with services to Blenheim airport and Picton Ferry Terminal, Railway Stations including a service to and from the Nelson Region.
ARAPAWA ISLAND
Many historic Maori Tribal walk tracks exist on Arapawa Island which is located with in the Queen Charlotte Sounds. These tracks extend to positional locations that enhances magnificent panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Tasman Sea, Cook Strait and views north toward the North Island of NZ and mountains of the central regions. Walk track walking times range from 4hrs to 6 hrs, whilst track camp outs can be arranged.
Many on site activities exist from greenstone and bone carving and sculpturing,mahinga kai or fish and seafood gathering for on site consumption if so desired, visits to the bush for tuition and participation in rongo or maori medicinal plant cures .
Dolphin and at certain times orca viewing is available from the sea shore, the wharf facility and from the hill side walk track positions. On site maori carving and flax product manufacture sessions can also be arranged, visits to the Long Island Marine Reserve fo scuba diving, viewing only tours and tours to view the on farm salmon processing is also another activity option. Additional charges are applicable for these activities and can be obtained upon request.
TRANSPORT - One may travel to the Island home by mail boat service which departs from the nearest port which is Picton and is located in the Marlborough province of New Zealand South Island.
This Mail boat service is available twice a week on a Wednesday and Saturday and is operated by Beachcomber Cruises whom have a booking office and reception at LONDON QUAY PICTON on the water front.
