Protecting and Nurturing the environment – In 2009 Southern Discoveries entered into a partnership with the Fiordland Conservation Trust and DOC to establish the Sinbad Sanctuary in Sinbad Gully to the left of the famous Mitre Peak.  The aim of the Sinbad Sanctuary project is to see the remote valley of Sinbad Gully become a sanctuary for many engendered & native species. On the 4th February 2011 a breeding pair of Kiwis were released in Sinbad Gully celebrating a milestone that sees the Gully as a safe haven for Kiwi. To date our staff volunteers have helped cut 8.5km of track and check over 70 traps catching 26 stoats and 33 rats.

MILFORD SOUND CRUISES

Our smaller boat explores small nooks and crannies along the edge of the fiord, nudging into sheer rock faces to examine flora and fauna in detail for 2hr 15min.

• Milford Discovery Centre and Milford Deep Underwater Observatory - New Zealand’s only floating underwater observatory is a unique, interactive learning experience. Refurbished and re-launched in January 2010 with striking new information panels, the Centre’s where you delve into the natural history, geology and environment of Milford Sound, deepen your understanding of fiord formation, intrepid Maori explorers and early European tourism.
• Kayaking – New this summer 2011. Enjoy a relaxing 1 hour kayak in serene Harrisons Cove with spectacular views up Harrisons Valley to the Pembroke Glaciers. This is an intimate experience with a maximum of 12 kayaks per tour including a specialist kayak & nature guide to point out the fiord features and wildlife. No previous experience is necessary and we have an automatic lift for easy entry and exit from the kayaks.
• Go Milford – Southern Discoveries very own personal small group tour departing from Te Anau. Travel in luxury with our local drivers providing fantastic commentary in the heart of Fiordland. • Queenstown Princess Lake Cruises – Join us on the Queenstown Princess for a unique view of Queenstown from the lake. Departing from the Queenstown Waterfront we take you over to Hidden Island, around the bottom of Cecil Peak and into the Frankton arm stopping at points of interest along the way including two 360 degree turns for ultimate panoramic photos. Learn about the history, local legends and stunning views from the lake. Includes complimentary tea/coffee and FREE entry to the Queenstown Underwater Observatory.
