Rotorua Planet Backpackers was established 12 years ago, and is owned and operated by Flick and Graeme Entwisle. Situated right next to the bus station in central Rotorua City, close to supermarkets, restaurants, bars, and with a very informative travel desk. We offer discounts on many activities and attractions.

Rotorua Planet Backpackers has 24-hour access, wireless internet, SKY TV, a video library, bike hire, barbecue, courtyard. Single, double, twin rooms and dorms with four to ten beds from $20 p/p.

Backpacker Facilities
The hostel at Rotorua Planet Backpackers is purpose built with all modern facilities, including a modern kitchen, laundry, email access, and a courtyard with barbecue. Having these modern facilities on site means that you are able to relax during your stay.

We have single, double and twin rooms, quads and a large dorm. We have very clean separate male and female bathrooms and toilets, each with their own private compartment. We have internet facilities with free email access for guests.

Rotorua is one of New Zealand’s main tourism centres and the Maori cultural centre of New Zealand, where many attractions related to Maori culture and history can be seen and experienced.

The magnificence of the native bush and flora in its natural state should not be missed. Rotorua’s volcanic and thermal areas are world famous, with beautiful colours and a physical appearance not seen anywhere else in the world. The lakes and rivers are known throughout the world for trout fishing, and you can hunt in the hills around the lakes. Where else can you catch a trout and hunt only ten minutes from the central city area?

Contrary to popular belief, Rotorua is not an expensive place to visit and to see the various attractions and activities – a responsible approach by operators and the city council have kept prices down.

Rotorua is an ideal base to stay at while visiting the Waitomo Caves, White Island and Urewera and Waikaremoana National Parks, with transport available to all these places. It is also possible to go down inside a volcano which erupted only 130 years ago and is now extinct – a must-do when you’re in Rotorua.

As for eating out, we have many ethnic restaurants from all over the world, allowing plenty of choice. A deep-rooted Maori cultural concept, Manaakitanga places a responsibility on us as your hosts to give you the best of ourselves, our time and our history. You should not miss the opportunity to try a Maori hangi, where food is cooked in the ground using super-heated rocks, and Rotorua’s Maori performances are a must-see for visitors.
