Puhoi River Canoe Hire is a successful small family business operating from our home adjacent to the Historic Bohemian Landing site on the banks of the Puhoi River. 

We New Zealanders affectionately refer to ourselves as Kiwis.  We are proud of our Kiwi heritage, our family and our unique outdoor kiwi lifestyle.   On June 29th 1863 the first 83 Bohemian pioneers from which our family descended were dropped off at Wenderholm and paddled up this meandering waterway by local Maori.  ‘Puhoi’ is a Maori name and translates to ‘slow-water’ which refers to the slow gentle tide that ebbs and flows the 8km to the village from the sea. 

We offer a safe leisurely kayak adventure paddling along the Puhoi River which meanders 8km (2-2.5hrs) from the Historic Bohemian Village through to the scenic Wenderholm Regional Park. We are a Qualmark Endorsed Visitor Activity, have resource consent and are ARC Regional Park Tourist Operator permit holders.  We are members of the Puhoi Business Group, The Matakana Coast Wine Country are 100% Proudly Kiwi owned and operated.

You can also just hire a kayak for 1 hour and paddle around the Puhoi Village.

We start each trip with a summary of our basic kayaking rules, we give you a map of the river and explain in detail exactly where you are going. For new-paddlers and rusty-paddlers we also give you basic paddling instruction. Then fit you out with a comfortable buoyancy aid, take you to the river, put you into your kayak - set you up and off on your glide down the river!

When doing the downriver paddle you will leave from our base adjacent to the Puhoi Landing and paddle 200m upstream to the centre of the village which is marked by the little stone library and domain bridge. It is possible to explore on upstream for another 1km to the top of the tidal reach. You must turn and paddle back down again past our base and head downriver through native bush, farmland and down into the mangrove forest. Along the way herons, pukekos, kingfishers and other water-minded birds flit in and out of the trees, listen very carefully and you may be lucky to hear the raucous laughter of the kookaburras. You will meander on down the wide estuary to the scenic Wenderholm Regional Park with its Pohutukawa fringed beaches, where our courtesy van will be waiting to return you to Puhoi Village.  The kayak adventure is 8kms and will take approx 2-2.5hrs.

We operate Puhoi River Kayak Trips daily 1 September - 30 June except Christmas Day. Gift Vouchers Available
