From seaweed and shellfish to sharks and seabirds - the marine environment of southern New Zealand is rich and diverse. The New Zealand Marine Studies Centre rolls back the tide to introduce the secrets of the Southern Ocean to visitors.

Peek inside a shark egg, shake hands with an octopus plus discover why albatross, penguins and seals make Otago Peninsula their home.

Join our knowledgeable staff for a guided tour of the Aquarium where they will captivate you with stories of their underwater encounters!

  • Food from the Sea - get a flavour for the harvests of our local ocean. From shellfish to seaweed - learn about New Zealand fisheries and aquaculture and see and taste local sea vegetables.
  • Conservation of the Deep - What threats are there to life in the mysterious deep ocean? See samples of deep sea species and meet the world's largest colossal squid model!
  • Maori and the Sea - Explore the Maori use of sea in this region - hear the legends, and learn about favourite catches, and traditional Maori fishing and preserving methods.
  • Marine Kiwiana - Meet iconic New Zealand marine wildlife such as paua and kina and find out about the species and forms that give inspiration for unique New Zealand art and culture.
