Knobs Flat is in the heart of Fiordland National Park. For those of you 'overseas' (a colloquial term referring to the rest of the world), this is in South West New Zealand, Te Wahi Pounamu, a World Heritage Area. Sitting in spectacular alpine valleys the Milford Road traverses a naturally rich diversity of native plants and animals: alpine meadows, beech forest and valley floors, and wildlife, kaka, kea, falcon (karearea), rock wren, blue duck and bats to name but a few.
Knobs Flat is a natural 'base camp' for exploring the Milford Road, Milford Sound and Fiordland National Park. Historically Knobs Flat has been a home for road construction crew. Now participate at Knobs Flat on conservation programmes or natural history trips; or just stay at Knobs Flat and enjoy the area on your own, walking, tramping, fishing, exploring or just relaxing.
