Karamea is a scenic hour and a half drive north of Westport. The area is lush with native bush, and long stretches of accessible beaches.Indulge your interest in historical sites, birdwatching or botany. The village of Karamea has a supermarket, craft outlet, cafes, general store/postal agency, I-site/ petrol outlet museum and a choice of 4 restaurants.
Tours can be booked to explore the famous Oparara Caves and limestone arches.
The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks.
Take a few hours to explore the Nikau Forests and wild beaches at the Western end of the Heaphy.
