Hello and welcome to Hatch Fly Fishing, a guiding service I (Craig Smith) set up 7 years ago. As principal guide I have been Fly Fishing for over 30 years around the lower South Island.
The Southern Lakes a beautiful place to live, and I love to take anglers fly fishing for trout in the picturesque backcountry rivers, streams and stillwaters of the Wanaka and Hawea region.
All levels of experience are catered for, with quality equipment plus patient fly fishing tuition for the novice, and expert local knowledge for the discerning angler. Generally I only guide 1-2 anglers per trip to ensure maximum quality time on the water.
The fish here are totally wild brown and rainbow trout. When possible, we, employ the classic New Zealand South Island fly fishing style in clear water. Your quarry is first spotted, then stalked or ambushed before being presented with a dry fly or nymph.

FULL DAY GUIDED FLY FISHING (rates quoted in NZ$, subject to change)
Fly fishing for New Zealand wild brown and rainbow trout in the rivers, lakes and streams of the Wanaka and Hawea region.
Rate: 1 angler NZ$690, 2 anglers $NZ750
Includes:
- Full days guided fly fishing.
- Pick up and drop off at accommodation.
- Transportation by 4WD or boat.
- Lunch and refreshments.
- Quality equipment and clothing if required.
- Flies and tippet for local conditions.
HALF DAY GUIDED FLY FISHING
Fly fishing to New Zealand wild brown and rainbow trout at locations involving less travel time.
Rate: 1 angler NZ$390, 2 anglers NZ$450
Includes:
- Half day guiding for 1 or 2 people (duration 5 - 6 hours).
- Pick up and drop off at accommodation.
- Transportation by 4WD or boat.
- Refreshments.
- Quality equipment and clothing if required.
- Flies and tippet for local conditions.
NEW ZEALAND CAMP OUT PACKAGE
Stay overnight in an authentic backcountry hut and enjoy wilderness New Zealand fly fishing for wild trout at its best.
Rate: Price on application. Generally add on to the daily guide fee $300 per night camp out fee for one angler, each extra angler $100. For some private huts there is and additional charge.
Includes:
- 2 or 3 days guided sight fly fishing.
- Gourmet food and wine, beer.
- Wilderness accommodation
- Transportation by 4WD (or helicopter at extra cost).
- Pick up and drop off at accommodation.
- Quality equipment and clothing if required.
- Flies and tippet for local conditions.
All the cooking and hard work is done for you. We take pride in cooked breakfasts, tasty lunches and hearty evening meals. Your job is to fish, admire the view, and breathe clean mountain air.
For access, we either four wheel drive, or helicopter (extra charge) to a base, and then fish and camp.
These trips are the best way to experience true wilderness fishing in the NZ South Island backcountry. We get to beautiful places with wild rivers and soaring mountains... areas seldom visited. The fish are generally large and very strong. Hooking up is only the start.
I guide all these trips personally to make sure you get the best out of your time in the backcountry.
