Our Akaroa Harbour Cruises follow a course that takes in around 4 or 5 of the special parts of Akaroa Harbour. The course can change with every cruise and is chosen as a result of wind direction and strength. We will generally perform three legs in the cruise: One upwind to demonstrate tacking, one beam reach to demonstrate the power of the wind, and one downwind leg to demonstrate gybing and (what many people dream of doing) typical blue water cruising.
- Tacking - Turning the boat from one board to the other when sailing upwind.
- Gybing - Turning the boat from one board to the other when sailing downwind.
- Setting Sails - How to raise sails to get the best performance out of them.
- Trimming Sails - Adjusting sail trim to maximise speed. Reading the woolies to achieve sail efficiency.
- Grinding - Using a two-speed non-tailing winch. Good winch practice.
- Tailing - How to tail to assist the grinder.
- Sail Drop - Dropping sails, packing to the boom, tying the sail down.
