TranzAlpine train: Christchurch - Greymouth

Operated by KiwiRail Scenic Journeys, the world famous TranzAlpine service runs daily between Christchurch and Greymouth throughout the year. The hugely acclaimed TranzAlpine is considered to be amongst the greatest train journeys in the world and can be taken as a spectacular day out from Christchurch.

The Midland Line was completed in the early 20th Century to ship goods between the east and west coasts of New Zealand’s South Island – a route that required slicing through the heart of the Southern Alps, with 19 tunnels and 4 towering viaducts that rise as high as 73 metres. With the increasing popularity of this incredible scenic journey throughout the late 20th century, KiwiRail reinvented the service by introducing new custom built world-class scenic carriages in 2011. Today, the TranzAlpine is New Zealand’s premier tourist train service, with luxurious seats providing ample space, windows that stretch from seat to ceiling and outdoor viewing cars that allow passengers to enjoy the great outdoors and capture perfect photos of the stunning landscapes.

The TranzAlpine leaves Christchurch daily at 08:15 and begins its journey across the Canterbury Plains with the foothills of the Alps looming ahead. From Springfield, the TranzAlpine swings north to meet the Waimakariri River and begin its ascent into the mountain landscape. After crossing the mountain plains of Craigieburn, the TranzAlpine cuts through a series of tunnels with the Waimakariri River far below. After a brief sojourn at Arthur’s Pass, the TranzAlpine then descends through the 8.5km long Otira Tunnel – which was the longest train tunnel in the world upon completion in 1923. The scenery then reaches new hei ghts as the train follows the banks of the Otira and Taramakau River beds before stopping at the beautiful fishing town of Moana (Lake Brunner). The final stretch once again weaves along river banks, firstly the Arnold River and then the Grey River, which leads out to the sea at Greymouth, the final destination. The train stops for an hour in Greymouth before departing back to Christchurch at 13:45.

On the TranzAlpine you will meet a mixture of travellers of all ages and types. There will be backpackers and those travelling one-way between the West Coast and the East Coast as they tour around New Zealand. The will be hikers travelling Arthur’s Pass, fishermen heading to Lake Brunner and day-trippers taking an amazing day out from Christchurch. Everyone you meet will agree, the TranzAlpine is spectacular must-do experience for whatever reason you choose to travel!
