Mt Tarawera
is the sacred mountain of the Ngati Rangitihi Tribe.
Visit this unique dormant volcano and gain and insight into the
history,volcanology and Mythology of this sleeping giant which last
erupted on June the 10th 1886 claiming the lives of approximately
153 people.
Guided tours
depart twice daily at 0800 and 1300
Take a guided
walk into the massive crater via the famous scree slide, or board
a helicopter for a birds eye view, a mountain bike ride down the
10k of road to the base will provide an exhilarant ride for the
more adventurous.

of access and acknowledge the sacred and special nature of the mountain
as a tribal landmark.
