New
Zealand's only 'mud bath' complex using some of the finest muds
in the world.
Long
before the 1840's when Europeans found and described the medicinal
properties of Tikitere as having 'quite remarkable curative properties',
Maori warriors returning from battle bathed to salve their wounds.
Now you too can take the waters and experience the unique muds in
the new spa at New Zealand's only mud bath complex.
Before immersing yourself in the unique mud and spa experience,
take a guided tour through Hells Gate - New Zealand's most active
geothermal field. Feel the Earth's raw power directly beneath you,
as you wind your way through sights never before seen. This mystical
journey will take you past pools of boiling mud, exploding waters,
steaming fumaroles, hot sulphurous lakes, the only accessible mud
volcano in a geothermal park and the largest hot waterfall in the
Southern Hemisphere - a sacred place where warriors gone would salve
their wounds in the sulphurous water and heal themselves after battle.
New Zealand Wai Ora Spa & Wellness Centre
Each mud bath in the Wai Ora ("Healthy waters") Spa centre
contains in excess of 100kgs of the finest geothermal muds in both
suspended and solid form. The silky mud is smoothed over the skin
leaving it very clean and soft to touch. After taking a mud bath,
enter the "North Island" or "South Island" shaped
sulphur water spa, both with their own hot water fall to relax and
revitalize your mind, body and soul. A cornerstone of the uniquely
New Zealand Mud Spa experience is the traditional Wai Ora massage.
This massage system is based on the concepts of Miri Miri the traditional
Maori massage regime that has been practiced for hundreds of years.
The massage, undertaken by trained Maori staff, is available as
a half hour or a full one-hour package between the hours of 9.00am
and 8.30pm daily. For the uninitiated the Wai Ora traditional massage
involves some energy balancing, joint manipulation, therapeutic
massage, and face/head massage that is both uplifting and relaxing
at the same time. Mud facials, body scrubs and treatments are also
available, utilising the finest of geothermal muds. The facility
has eight purpose built treatment rooms that impress on the client
the sense of New Zealand and all that it offers down to the Manuka
(New Zealand's native Ti Tree) oil essence that gently permeates
the rooms.
Open
from 9.00am - 8.30pm everyday, including public holidays.
