We
aim to promote New Zealand's cultural heritage and art, especially
in
Hawke's Bay.
To
do this we operate a museum, art gallery, exhibition centre, cinema,
museum shop, theatre and science/ technology centre.
We
have excellent displays and outstanding exhibitions. Our strengths
include local Maori treasures of Ngati Kahungunu, unique remains
of land
Dinosaurs, tales of the destructive 1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake,
Art Deco, superb exhibitions of art and social history, stimulating
art-house films, top live theatre performances and local heritage
stories.
Visit
Hawkes Bay Museum to experience the best of Art, Culture and Heritage
in the Bay. Discover great exhibitions, fascinating collections
and wonderful treasures from our rich past as well as challenging
contemporary shows of art and craft. Earthquake - Life on the
Edge : With a mighty shaking roar the earth jolted Hawke's Bay
into a new era in 1931. Audio-visuals of Survivors' Stories, photographs
and news items tell you more. Dinosaurs - Only in Hawke's Bay!
Amateur fossil hunter Joan Wiffen found a dinosaur bone here in
1975. Amazingly, this was the first proof that land dinosaurs lived
in New Zealand. Her workshop and tools, dinosaur bones and fossils,
touch screens and an audio visual are on show. Nga Tukemata -
The Awakening : Learn about the local Maori people, Ngati Kahungunu,
through their very special treasures (taonga) in Nga Tukemata -
the Awakening. You will begin to understand how the present living
culture has spiritual links with the past through people, words,
tools and artworks. SEE the delightful Art Deco Style and
20th Century Design in the Home featuring more treasures
from the collections. The Museum Shop completes the visitor
experience.
ENJOY
great movies in the CENTURY CINEMA where world class films
are screened each week in a superb 330-seat theatre with superb
acoustics, state-of-the-art technology and Dolby digital sound.
