Brentleigh Homestead
is a farmstay and fishing retreat on the banks of the Mataura River,
famous for it's brown trout fly fishing. Located near Balfour, in
the South of the South Island of New Zealand, Brentleigh is a 506-hectare
(1250-acre) farm 30 minutes from Gore. The farm includes 250 hectares
of cereal crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and peas. The remainder
grazes for sheep, dairy heifers, cattle and deer.
The homestead
is set in a large, relaxing country garden. Mary grows over 1,000
paeony plants which flower in November and December and has developed
an export market for the flowers.
Brentleigh Homestead
has developed a reputation for genuine hospitality and delicious
meals.
The Fishing
The legendary Mataura River flows through the Brentleigh property
and world class fly fishing for brown trout is right on our doorstep.
In the surrounding region there are many other fine fly fishing
rivers such as the Waikaia, Oreti, Aparima, Waimea, Hamilton Burn,
Otamita and Mararoa. All of these rivers are within easy driving
distance of Brentleigh Homestead. If you think you might benefit
from the knowledge of one of the many fine local fishing guides,
then we can arrange that for you also.
