Built in the mid-1880s and renovated in the Edwardian style around 1914, Arles offers a warm welcome, comfortable beds, spacious rooms and cosy central heating in the cooler months.

Location
2.5 hr from Wellington; 1.5 hr from National Park
3 hr from Taupo; 2 hr from New Plymouth.

Bedrooms have duvets, tea/coffee facilities, hair dryer, electric blankets, fresh flowers and toiletries. The rimu-panelled lounge is cosy in winter with the wood fire – just the place to relax with a complimentary wine or sherry and a book from the extensive library.

During the warmer months, you can swim in the saltwater pool (built in the 1950s but recently refurbished) or take forty winks on the wide verandah or under one of the old established trees.

Feast on a breakfast of home-made delights including jams and marmalades from the fruit in the garden, freshly-baked breads and cake or muffins, and your choice of eggs with all the trimmings.

Guests have their own fully-equipped kitchen (giving the choice of self-catering lunch and dinner), laundry, barbecue and broadband/wireless internet – all complimentary.

Four Accommodation Options

  • Wisteria suite: king bed with en-suite & private balcony
  • Elms suite: queen bed with en-suite
  • Grace suite: 2-bedroom (double & twin) family suite with private bathroom (clawfoot bath with handheld shower)
  • Treetops Apartment: Separate 2-bedroom (queen + twin) apartment for families of up to 6. Kitchen, lounge/dining room & balcony. Self-catering.
  • Cot available

The gardens contain many long-established trees including the southernmost Queensland kauri, the 'trampled' oak, two huge Norfolk Island pines and a lovely lilly-pilly tree. There are also maples, magnolias, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, palms, a stand of bamboo and a range of NZ native trees including rimu, karaka, kowhai, rata, puka, titoki, puriri and tree ferns. Awake to the birdsong, watch native wood pigeons drink from the pond while breakfasting and listen to the morepork at night – it’s paradise!
